A tranquil, modern hospital designed specifically for traditional Chinese Medicine has been created by GLA Architects. Located in the eastern province of ShanDong, China, ‘Weihai Hospital’ draws upon the essence of Chinese style courtyards but with a contemporary architectural expression and on a substantial scale.

Eschewing the sanitized aesthetic of many hospitals around the globe, ‘Weihai Hospital’ is predominantly a collection of buildings and courtyards with large mirrored waterscapes at its centre. The hospital’s almost 8000-square-meter design is based on a combination of traditional Chinese elements constructed from modern materials. The original site of the hospital had previously housed bungalows in disrepair. Much of the charm of ‘Weihai Hospital’ is where it’s situated: by a pinus thunbergii (black pine) forest, and not far from the sea. Further to this is the multiple courtyards and gardens that connect to various corridor buildings, with myriad trees that treat patients and visitors to picturesque scenery. There’s a purity and elegance to the comprehensive health care facility that is matched by the calm reflections provided by the waterscapes, making it look more hotel than hospital.
