Nowadays everyone who owns a smartphone is a photographer. And we love to document everything. Our food, travels, clothes even our way to work using the subway or whatever happens on the street. It´s mostly preferred that every shot looks authentic and not staged. Even selfies should look like “oops, just took a snapshot while I did a duck face laying half naked in bed and my dog posted it on Instagram while it was playing with my phone”.
However a lot is staged, even so called authentic street style shots. We take it back to a time where social media didn’t exist and “street photography” belonged to “voyeuristic” photographers, who truly caught the moment unstaged at all.
Garry Winogrand
Best known for snapping Marilyn Monroe as her dress flew up while promoting A Seven Year Itch, Garry Winogrand is considered one of the most important street photographers of the 20th century. He, by the way hated the term “street photographer“.
